When a crown is the right choice

After a root canal on a back tooth

Molars and premolars that have had a root canal are more brittle. A crown or onlay protects them from cracking under chewing forces.

A cracked or broken tooth

When a large part of the tooth or a cusp has broken away, a crown holds what remains together.

A very large filling

When the filling is bigger than the tooth left around it, a crown is often more durable than replacing the filling again.

Severe wear or grinding

Teeth worn down by grinding or acid erosion can be rebuilt to their proper height with crowns.

When you may NOT need a full crown

A crown preparation removes a large amount of healthy tooth – roughly two-thirds of the visible tooth structure – and cannot be undone. Before you agree to one, it is worth asking whether something smaller would work:

  • A large cavity or one broken cusp on an otherwise healthy tooth can often be restored with a ceramic onlay, which keeps more of your natural tooth.
  • A mostly intact root-canal-treated tooth can sometimes be restored with a well-done filling, especially if you don’t grind your teeth.
  • A discoloured or chipped front tooth is usually better treated with whitening, bonding or a veneer.
  • Sensitivity alone is almost never a reason for a crown – the cause should be found and treated first.

Honest note: crowns are recommended very often in India, sometimes when a smaller restoration would do. If you have been told you need a crown elsewhere, you are welcome to bring your X-ray for a second opinion. – Dr. Aditi Goel

Dental bridges

A bridge replaces a missing tooth by placing crowns on the teeth either side of the gap and joining them to a false tooth (pontic) in the middle. A three-unit bridge costs roughly the price of three crowns.

Traditional bridge

The most common type: crowns on both neighbouring teeth support the false tooth. Strong and quick, but the neighbouring teeth must be trimmed.

Cantilever bridge

Supported from one side only – used when there is a healthy tooth on just one side of the gap.

Maryland (bonded) bridge

A thin wing bonded to the back of the neighbouring teeth, with little or no trimming. Mainly for front teeth; it relies entirely on the bond.

Implant-supported bridge

When several teeth are missing, implants can carry the bridge so your natural teeth are left untouched.

Bridge or implant?

A bridge is faster and usually costs less at the start, but it needs the neighbouring teeth to be prepared and typically lasts about 5–15 years. An implant leaves the neighbouring teeth untouched and can last much longer with good care, but takes 3–6 months and costs more (about ₹28,000–₹75,000 for a single implant with crown). If the teeth next to the gap already have large fillings or crowns, a bridge can make good sense; if they are healthy, an implant often does. Read more in our dental implants page.

What getting a crown involves

  1. Examination and X-ray. We check the tooth, the root and the gum around it, and confirm a crown is really the best option.
  2. Preparation and impression. Under local anaesthesia the tooth is shaped, and an impression or scan is taken for the lab. You leave with a temporary crown.
  3. Fitting the crown. At the second visit the temporary is removed and the final crown is checked for fit, bite and colour, then cemented.
  4. Review. We check your bite and the gum margin, and see you at your regular check-ups.

A bridge follows the same steps, with the supporting teeth prepared at the first visit and a temporary bridge fitted while the lab makes the final one.

Making your crown last

  • Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth every day – decay at the edge of a crown is the most common reason it fails.
  • If you grind your teeth, wear a night guard to protect both your crowns and your natural teeth.
  • Avoid biting very hard objects such as ice, bones or bottle caps.
  • Come for check-ups every six months so small problems at the margin are caught early.

Crowns and bridges FAQs

How much does a dental crown cost in Gurgaon?

In 2026, a crown in Gurgaon typically costs ₹2,000–₹4,000 in metal, ₹4,000–₹8,000 in porcelain-fused-to-metal, ₹8,000–₹18,000 in zirconia and ₹12,000–₹20,000 in E-max. Your exact cost depends on the tooth and material and is confirmed after an examination.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Most back teeth need a crown or onlay after a root canal because they take heavy chewing forces and are more likely to crack. A front tooth, or a back tooth that is still mostly intact, can sometimes be restored with a filling instead.

Is zirconia or E-max better?

Zirconia is stronger and suits back teeth and people who grind. E-max is more translucent and looks more natural, so it is often chosen for front teeth. Both are metal-free and tooth-coloured.

Is getting a crown painful?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia, so preparation feels like having a filling. The gum around the tooth may feel a little sore for a day or two afterwards.

How long does a dental crown last?

A well-made crown commonly lasts 10–15 years, and many last longer with good brushing, cleaning between the teeth and regular check-ups. Grinding and decay at the edges shorten its life.

What is the difference between an onlay and a crown?

An onlay covers only the damaged part of a back tooth, while a crown covers the whole tooth. An onlay removes less healthy tooth, so it is preferred when enough strong tooth remains.

How much does a dental bridge cost?

A bridge is priced per unit, so a three-unit bridge (two crowns and one false tooth) costs roughly the price of three crowns – about ₹15,000–₹30,000 in standard materials in Gurgaon.

Why did my old crown turn black at the gum line?

Older porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns can show a dark line as the gum recedes and the metal edge becomes visible. Replacing it with a zirconia or E-max crown avoids this.
